From the beginning of life food has been a symbol of love and security. It comforts and nourishes. When you make food with your child, you show you care.

When a child "cooks" he learns many things:

Vocabulary: Some new words can be dissolving, measure, sift, pour, mix, peel, etc.

Science and MathConcepts: Cooking is a hands-on experience. Measuring, timing, setting the temperature, and seeing what happens are all scientific concepts.

Creativity: Food and cooking awaken the artist in all of us. Colors, textures, shapes, and sizes inspire creative expression.

Social Skills: Working together, waiting your turn, sharing and giving are all life skills.

World Cultures: Recipes handed down in the family teach a child about his heritage. Recipes from other countries teach him about the world and other cultures.

Motor Skills: Activities such as mixing, pouring, chopping, rolling, and kneading are developed.

Sensory Perceptions: Seeing, touching, smelling and tasting are experienced in cooking.

Sanitation and Safety: Keeping the area clean, washing you hands, and keeping food clean and safe are sanitation issues. Proper use of equipment and adult supervision especially when using knives, hot water, and the stove are safety issues.

Always supervise, participate, and emphasize safety:

Some of these recipes are edible. Some are for making arts and craft materials. ENJOY !

My kids love to help out in the kitchen, especially the 7-year old. I'm printing out these excellent ideas. I love the idea of hands-on education. The kids are having so much fun helping, they don't even realize how much they're learning! Great job!
