Driving while pregnant poses a number of health and safety risks, and the dangers actually increase with seatbelts and airbags. Even though you need to drive as carefully as possible when you're pregnant, there are a few ways to reduce the risk of losing your unborn baby in case of a crash. Here are eight safety precautions to be aware of if you're driving while pregnant: 1. Wear the seatbelt correctly. Make sure the seatbelt wraps under your belly and not over it since this can create unnecessary pressure on the fetus. The shoulder portion of the belt should rest comfortably across the chest, and should never be tucked under the arm in any situation.
2. Stretch out your legs. Making sure your legs get enough circulation is essential while traveling; your feet can easily go numb if you're sitting too close to the dashboard and steering wheel, so extend the front seat as far back as possible until you're in a comfortable position. As long as you can control the pedals easily, you can maximize your space to reach your comfort level.
3. Make space between yourself and steering wheel. Airbag accidents are much more likely when you're too close to the steering wheel. Adjust the headrest and seat so you can distance yourself from the steering wheel and have plenty of room to breathe with ease.
4. Install an adjustable steering wheel. This can help you extend the steering wheel out, or push it further in during each stage of pregnancy. You need to be able to adjust and customize this area as much as possible; AAA recommends at least 10 inches of space between you and the steering wheel.
5. Avoid driving at night. Night driving is more stressful and poses a higher risk for all types of drivers. Don't increase your risk for an accident when you're pregnant; just organize your schedule to drive or travel in a car during daylight hours only.
6. Don't wear a coat. The extra material and weight can get in the way of supporting you while wearing a seatbelt. Simply remove your coat and set it aside; you can always use the car's heater to stay warm!
