If you have been having pains and inflammation of your pancreas for a long time, then you may have chronic pancreatitis. Your condition is simply a swelling of the pancreas due to a great number of factors, most of them involving either lifestyle or genetics. You may or may not have diabetes to go along with your condition. In any case, chronic pancreatitis is painful, making chronic pancreatitis and pain management two issues that must go hand in hand.Chronic pancreatitis and pain management are so well intertwined that in treating pain, patients with chronic pancreatitis often think, and mistakenly, that they are also being cured of their disease. This is, of course, far from the truth. The effectiveness of decreasing chronic pancreatitis and pain management will depend greatly on how severe the condition is, and if it has any genetic basis. If there are any inborn errors of metabolism, such as those found that cause specific metabolic disorders, then the pancreatitis may indeed never go away.
Chronic pancreatitis and pain management are not without hope, however. Pain is managed through several analgesics; in the past, the most widely used drug was the popular Demerol. However, Demerol is quite potentially toxic, so that when discussing chronic pancreatitis and pain management, physicians advise against using Demerol and preach rehydration instead.
Aside from rehydration, chronic pancreatitis can be managed through restricting the amounts of fat in one's diet. This is important for pancreatitis cases that are accompanied by gallstones, since gallstones can keep the gall bladder from releasing bile; bile, in turn, helps the body to break down fat.
If you are interested in chronic pancreatitis and pain management of this disorder, talk to your health care practitioner for more information.
