Things You Shouldn't Say to a Vegetarian Family Member

Most people are affected by the opinions that their family members have on certain issues. One such issue is a vegetarian lifestyle. Whether you are close or distant relative to one of your family members who has made the decision to become a vegetarian or vegan, there are many things that you can do in order to show acceptance of this decision. In order to help ensure that the vegetarian in your life does not begin to develop negative feelings towards you, the best thing that you can do is avoid some of these statements that may seem harmless, but really can annoy or hurt the feelings of a vegetarian.

"How Do You Live off Fruits and Vegetables?"

A vegetarian who feels strongly about his or her lifestyle could easily turn around and say how do you live off meats? However, since most vegetarians know what it feels like to be criticized for their own lifestyle, it is not all that likely that one of your family members, even if they are extended, will say this to you. The most important thing that you can do is realize that vegetarians often do not eat only fruits and vegetables. Many choose to consume animal byproducts, such as cheese and milk. A lot of vegetarians also eat animal substitution products, such as veggie burgers. Even if your first instinct is to ask this question, it is probably something that you will want to avoid because most vegetarians will take it very offensively.

"You're Just Going Through a Phase. You'll Eat Meat Someday."

Great article (great minds think alike since I wrote a similar article, but with different things not to say). Like Sophie's comment below, I was also forced to eat meat as a child, and it usually grossed me out. As an adult, I realized it is difficult to say I'm an animal lover or environmentalist if I eat meat. So I became vegetarian.

I used to be vegetarian and got all kinds of nasty remarks. It was worrisome having to worry about insulting family when visiting for dinner as well as there were rarely any vegetarian dishes. I'd end up with a roll and some butter because the only other things to eat were meat and vegetables flavored with bacon ;-/

Very well written Jody! I think it is hard for some people to understand how a person can not eat meat (and/or dairy) and still be healthy. It is probably because our country has traditionally been very "meat and potatoes" oriented. Great article!

I'm lactose intolerant and My OWN MOTHER used to ask if I wanted to go for ice cream...asking if they want some meat is just about as insulting. Good article.

Well said, Jody. Even though I'm not a vegetarian I rarely eat meat. I get similar comments to the ones you mentioned. It is so annoying having to explain that I just do not care for meat very much. I've always felt that way. As a child, I was literally force fed meat so I would "grow big and strong". Sophie

I think the term "vegetarian" has a certain stigma, just like being called gay or being of a particular race. People have preconcieved notions that aren't necessarily positive, and vegetarians might become defensive. To each their own!

Very good tips - especially the part about offering vegitarians meat. That's really rude in my opinion, but people don't always consider what they're saying.
