Eye Allergies in Contact Lens Wearers

Several thousand contact wearers are afflicted with sensitive eyes and eye allergies. For these people eye allergies are more annoying than they are for those who do not wear contacts. Not only do they have to deal with the itching and burning of eye allergies but wearing contacts can be made difficult as well.

Allergens including pollen, dust, and pet dander can cause eye allergies. When these substances are present the irritation they cause can be magnified by wearing contact lenses.

The causes of eye allergies in contact lens wearers are not only the allergens that cause problems for non-contact wearers. The solutions used to clean contacts can cause eye irritation and eye allergies.

If allergic reactions are caused by products that are used to clean contacts there are other brands and types of solutions that can be used. Changing products to find one that doesn't cause an allergic reaction is a good idea although it may be the slow way to get past painful eye allergies.

A faster way to deal with allergies to contact lens cleaning products may be to use disposable contacts. This would decrease the amounts of cleaning fluids that would need to be used. Saline solution and the contact lenses should be all that is needed.

There are also many different products that are being sold now that are made for people who have eye allergies to make sure they don't have an issue with allergic reactions. These solutions work well for people who are having problems with more traditional products.

Environmental allergens are a bit more difficult than changing brands of products. Eye allergies can be caused by all sorts of small particles that can be found in the air. These can cause an issue when they get under the contact lenses causing the allergens to be ground into the eye. The result is reddened, swollen, sore eyes that often itch and can be painful. If eye allergies are ignored they can lead to conjunctivitis and recurrent eye infections. Eye allergy sufferers may have to stop wearing contact lenses during allergy seasons to keep from having symptoms.
