Poll: Clinton Increases Her Lead Nationwide

The latest daily poll from the Rasmussen Reports shows that New York Senator Hillary Clinton has rebounded in the polls and is now at her highest level of support since November.

Clinton leads with 40%, her highest mark in December so far. In second place is Illinois Senator Barack Obama with 27%, followed by former North Carolina Senator John Edwards with 13%. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson gets 3% as does Delaware Senator Joe Biden.

The respondents in the poll were all likely to vote in the Democratic Primaries and the daily results are based on a four-day average. And it is the same with the poll on the Republican race.

Both Clinton and Obama picked up endorsement of major news papers, Clinton from the Des Moines Register and Obama from the Boston Globe. However it is not clear if this is a good thing for the candidates because in the poll only 4% said that their local paper endorsing a candidate will increase the chance they will vote for that person and 13% say it would make them vote against the candidate instead.

When it comes to how favorably the candidates are viewed, the Democratic voters give Clinton 82%, Edwards 72% and Obama 66% while when they asked all voters, Democrats, Republicans and Independents Obama gets 48%, and Clinton and Edwards each get 47%.

Over on the Republican side of the ledger, we have a field that is much more closely packed together. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is in the lead with 21%, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is next with 19%, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney gets 15%, former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson 13% and Arizona Senator John McCain gets 12% and Texas Congressman Ron Paul 5%.

The Republican voters give Giuliani a favorability rating of 67%, Thompson 64%, Huckabee 63%, Romany 62% and McCain 59% while when they asked all of the voters, McCain not only gets the highest in his party, but among the candidates of both parties with 52%. Thompson has a favorability rating of 45%, Giuliani and Huckabee each gets 44% and Romney 42%.
