Military privileges inevitably undergo change following military retirement. But many still remain the same. Read on to find out what stays the same after you retire from the military.

Shopping Privileges

Shopping privileges at the military installation do not cease once an active duty member retires. State tax does not apply when retirees shop on base, which can yield considerable savings to retirees and their immediate, eligible family members. For example, at military installations in California, retirees save 7.25% on sales tax and that is before additional discounts are applied to merchandise purchased at the military installation. Of course, not all food and merchandise is cheaper at the military installation.

But that is not all. Military retirees are entitled to shop at other military installations while they travel too, so that they can keep on saving money whether they are at home or away. Air Force retirees are not just limited to shopping at Air Force bases. They can compare prices and shop at Marine, Army, or Navy military installations as well.

Continued Club Membership

Club card members can make considerable savings at the base eateries, when attending base sponsored social functions, personal events and so on. Fortunately, that does not cease once an active duty members retires. As long as the retiree continues to pay their club membership dues, they will be able to continue to enjoy the same discounts and privileges that they were used to while they were on active duty in the military.

Free Gym Membership

Gym membership fees can be very high depending on the location and not at all affordable for people who have to struggle to stretch a tight budget. While active duty members are allowed to make use of their military installation's gym for free the same applies to active duty personnel who retire.

Military Shuttle Buses

Takeaways
  • Shopping privileges remain the same once you retire
  • Continued club membership is still open to those who pay their dues
  • Gym membership is still free
Did You Know?
Military shuttle buses are also available to retirees, but on a space available basis

I'm with Lenora- many of their benefits should follow them into retirement because they do indeed deserve them. Very good article!

Thanks for sharing that...they should be entitled to many benefits when they retire. They do deserve them.
