Ulcerative Colitis mostly seems to affect adults but it can affect children as young as 5 years old. If you are a parent with a child who has Ulcerative Colitis you can learn to live with Ulcerative Colitis and help your child to learn to live with it.

There is a drug that was FDA approved in December of 2006 that children can take to help with their symptoms that they experience with Ulcerative Colitis. This drug is Colazal (balsalazide disodium) and it helps treat mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis in patient's ages 5 years to 17 years old.

This type of bowel disease, Ulcerative Colitis, causes inflammation of the colon and rectum and it affects about 5 percent of 100,000 children in the United States alone each year.

The most common side affects associated with the use of Colazal were headache and symptoms related to the gastrointestinal tract, such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea but it does help reduce the Ulcerative Colitis symptoms of bleeding from the rectum and the appearance of gastrointestinal mucosa.

Tiffany has shared her story of her son who is 11 years old having Ulcerative Colitis with me with the understanding and agreement not share their last name or any other personal information because her son already has it hard enough and she doesn't want to make worse for him. I have agreed and I completely understanding her reason's.

Tiffany says, "Luke was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 2 years ago and we have had to learn to deal with it. It has been hard on me and my husband but Luke has been great through it all. He is so strong. It has been really hard for him but I know that he try's to stay strong for me.

When he was first started experiencing the symptoms we didn't know what was wrong with him. The first thing me and my husband thought was that he had cancer of the colon, it was horrible. We took him to the doctor and to another doctor and another and they finally diagnosed him with Ulcerative Colitis.
