Think about one of your favorite famous writers. I bet you that they have an online website. It is true that several writers use personalized websites to advance their writing career. It is a simple way to broadcast
what you have done and also get more work. The website should include a couple of these things.

Own Domain Name: Not many clients will take you seriously if start your own writing website/portfolio on a blogspot website. If you are serious about this, you should invest the time and money to get your own domain name. Preferably you should purchase your first and last name at a dot com site. If you have a common name, you may add writer or something else professional in the domain name.

Looking Good: As sad as it is, first impressions are everything. Since you may not meet several of your writing clients face to face, your site will act as your first impression. Therefore you should metaphorically dress it in a suit. To do this, you should either learn how to do some basic html, css, and web design, or hire someone to do it for you. For about $100-$300 you can get a professional basic package from a web designer. All you need is a simple and tasteful design and a few links.

Resume: This site is for you to advance your career, so why would you not put your resume on there. Make sure the resume is professional looking. Also, for internet safety reasons, omit your personal contact information. You can share that with your future clients later.

Samples: Even if you have never been published before, it is important to include samples of your work. If you have been published, include scanned tearsheets with a typed html file of the same work. For those who have not been published, take the time to write two to three articles on the writing you specialize in.
