Planet Fitness Gym Membership: At $10 a Month, it Doesn't Get Much Better

When Planet Fitness came to the neighborhood, it let everyone know it with its now-infamous postcards offering a gym membership for only $10 a month. I was pretty suspicious. I mean, with a membership rate that low, what kind of equipment do they have?

I just canceled my other gym membership ($60 a month) because I didn't go enough to justify the cost. I needed to go somewhere and decided that at $10 a month, if I only went once a week, it was worth it to join Planet
 Fitness.

I signed up, and the beauty of Planet Fitness, aside from the free tootsie rolls, is that it is a month-to-month contract. There was no three-year membership required, which in my mind is comforting, because if I don't like it, I can leave.

There was a $49 sign-up fee which they occasionally waive. I was not privy enough to this fact so I did pay it. They also have an upgraded membership that allows use of their tanning beds and massage chairs for $19 a month, but I don't tan and I have a husband to cover the massage portion so I passed. You also walk away with a styling T-shirt and a free purple pen when you sign up. Bonus!

The equipment was plentiful. They had at least sixty treadmills and twenty stationary bikes. They had ten elliptical machines. There weight lifting section had all of the basics. They offered dumbbells and machines.

Planet Fitness offers free personal training. It's more like you and three other people with a trainer as he tells you what the machine does, but for free it is worth it. You can't ask for one one one training when you are paying a dollar a visit now can you.

They proudly announce that it is a no frills gym. It is a no judgment zone and no meat-heads will be there mocking your lack of gym prowess. They were right for the most part. I always felt comfortable. I never worried that anyone was judging me or questioning why I was in "their" gym.

"Planet Fitness offers free personal training. It's more like you and three other people with a trainer as he tells you what the machine does, but for free it is worth it." Er, this is not personal training. Nowhere close to it. Misnomer.

One just opened near me and I am definitely joining! The tanning alone at a place such as Hollywood Tans, is about 20 bucks a month! Unlimited tanning, plus a gym, and free guess passes... what's not to LOVE!

actually you can use the trainer more than the free classes. you just pay for it. He is very good where I go. falls Church va. So if you need a trainer, hire him thru the gym.

Last summer I had begun walking at my local track. When the weather turned cold I was looking for an alternative that wouldn't be too expensive. PlanetFitness for $10 a month fits the bill. When the warm weather returns and I skip the gym in favor of the track again I almost won't feel guilty for the monthly loss of $10.

I am a member of a Rockville Maryland gym that cost only $90 for the first year and $60 per year thereafter. They have fitness trainer and a nurse there as well. This is partially sponsored by the City Of Rockville, which is why it is so cheap. Great article.

Yes there was a whopping $19 yearly membership fee, but that is a small price tyo pay. I cancelled my membership with no problem whatsoever when I moved out of town, the staff at your location must not be up to par.

I hate planet fitness. It's not "No Contract" at all. You have to provide them with a CC that they charge every month. Also, they say 24 hours, when they close at 7 on weekends and 9 on weekdays. I still don't understand how they get away with a sign saying "24 Hours". Just because you are open for more 24 hours a WEEK doesn't mean you can just plaster "24 Hours" every where. They also charge an annual fee with their "No Contract" Gym membership. I cancelled my membership at the end of September and was still charged an annual fee on October 1st, even though I'd only been there 2 months! Their staff sucks too.

Now I have friends and family calling me in the morning to get off my lazy ? and go to the gym. It is free for them and they no it. LOL. But I am force to go. $10.00 is for only myself. 21.00 is for me and a guest any guest. Have fun and stay fit.

this gym is good if you do the treadmill, basic dumbbell, then it worth $10. But if you doing those heavy weight,, bench.. (which require to GRUNT) then this gym is not for you. So the price $10 have a reason.. and their is an alarm to goes off if you break any of the rule..
