According to The True Food Network, a grassroots network for the Center for Food Safety, genetically modified (GM) foods from genetically engineered (GE) ingredients can be found in products within most of the nation’s households, likely unknown to the persons residing there. The True Food Network also states, “Genetic Engineering (GE) is a radical new technology that manipulates the genes and DNA - the building blocks of all living things. Unlike traditional breeding, genetic engineering creates new life forms that would never occur in nature, creating new and unpredictable health and environmental risks. To create GE crops, genes from bacteria, viruses, plants, animals and even humans have been inserted into plants like soybeans, corn, canola, and cotton.”
Based on this information, a grassroots movement with a broad underground base has formed. Aside from folks who have generally taken an interest to eat more organic produce and products, there are those who have chosen to additionally refuse genetically modified foods as staples in their homes. Thanks to groups like the True Food Network and Krafty.org, as well as the Consumer’s Union, there are easily attainable lists of food products that contain no GE/GM ingredients.
Here are some recommendations for foods under ten dollars. These items can be found at your local Whole Foods grocer, through Amazon.com’s grocery store, through the online store at wellnessgrocer.com or a local natural foods store.
