In a taped conversation of the distressed 911 call, friends can be heard hysterically trying to get instruction on doing CPR on Donda West the mother of the famous hip-hop artist Kanye West. She had stopped breathing and they were trying to administer CPR on her. There were concerns about Donda having plastic surgery with her heart problems. Donda tragically died after having routine plastic surgery.

Dr. Gabriel Wilson of St.Luke's Hospital gave advice on how to handle emergency situations.

Number one:

Call 911. Call immediately if a child is involved. Start CPR first if it is an adult.

Number two:

Get the person on a firm surface. A mattress is not firm enough to do CPR on effectively.

Number three:

Follow the directions of the emergency person on the telephone. Preferably you will have a least one other person with you. One to listen to the 911 call and one to administer CPR.

Everyone should know CPR. There are classes available to anyone in your area. CPR has saved many lives and will make you feel more secure having this knowledge. Taking a first aid course should be mandatory in all schools I believe, as well as all jobs should require learning CPR through their companies at their expense.

Donda West may still be alive today if her Dr. (who is under investigation) was more cautious with her health history. This tragedy could have been avoided. Maybe if her friends would have not paniced or knew CPR she would be alive today. I believe that although it was a horrible tragedy, and her friends did all they could, maybe if they had better training she would be alive today. I am sure they are devastated as we all would be in that situation.

Donda and her son were extremely close and he was so very proud of his mother. Relationships like that between mothers and sons are few and far between, I believe and especially during the holidays, it has to be horribly difficult for Kayne to deal with.

  • Companies should have mandatory CPR classes for all employees and pay for them.
  • CPR has saved many lives.

Many people are afraid to administer CPR.

I am ashamed to say, but I walked out of a CPR class when they told me that sometimes the victim vomits in your mouth.

Crystal Sky is right. But, if you learn it and take refresher courses regularly, in a scary situation like this, it does come back to you if you close your eyes and take a deep breath (at least, all my EMT training, including CPR, came back for me in a couple sticky situations). But CPR should be taken regularly, because they keep making little changes! LOL! Great write-up, Shana!

Yeah I think it is very scary and even if you have been taught, it would be so easy to panic!

What a shame this woman lost her life because of this doctor who should have looked into her health history. Very good tips on CPR and excellent advice. I was once taught CPR when I worked at a daycare, but I don't recall the details on what to do.
