Every year my friends and I get together and share white elephant gifts with each other for the Christmas holiday season. We have done white elephant gifts for so long that I really can't remember how
it started. Our definition of a white elephant gift is something that you don't want anymore. It can be something from around the house or you could go out and buy something but I can't remember the last time any one of us bought something. We have so much stuff around our houses that we don't want that we don't need to buy anything new that we don't want.

We usually have our white elephant gift exchange before Christmas. I think it is because after Christmas we want to get on with our lives without any extra pressure. Or maybe we just can't wait to do our white elephant gift exchange because it is so much fun. We don't have a regular meeting place so we take turns meeting at each others houses.

At our white elephant gift exchanges we have the usual treats that you find at a Christmas get together like cookies and coffee. Our parties are really mild so there is no alcohol. With no alcohol we can actually remember which gift is ours and what it is or was. We are a spin group and no we don't exercise on exercise bikes instead we sit around in a circle and actually spin wool on old fashioned spinning wheels. Not too exciting for most people but we really look forward to our get togethers. So when we exchange our white elephant gifts we are still sitting in our circle that way we can see what everyone else is getting as they open their white elephant gifts.

We start out our white elephant exchange by picking numbers that way we know what lucky person gets to pick put the first gift. Highest number goes first and then we go down the numbers until the last person is picked to get a gift. We wait until the last person has a gift before we open the gifts so that there is no chance that the last person might be left with the gift they brought. Know one wants to take home the same white elephant gift that they brought with them.

But if you introduced alcohol, you wouldn't be obliged to remember your gift!
