Poetry: Why?

I'd like to note that I wrote Why? to take on the mystery of the purpose of life. To that extent, the poem only deals with the life of an individual; as many have mentioned over the years, there is a much richer legacy to be had from a person's life than merely death - children, for
example. However, since the focus of this piece is the individual, then death is pretty much the end of the road, even if the echoes of having lived might resound throughout all of time.

Why?

Ours is not to reason why
Ours is but to do and die

For life is all that means anything
and death is all the fruit life can bring

Do as you will, and do as you must
Be true to the truth, for all will be dust

The end is beggining, though there is much time
And decieving oneself is the only true crime

Regret is all that can wound, hope is all that can heal
Love is all we can do, change is all we can feel

Now, what was the question?

Tye - That's exactly the kind of reaction I was hoping for! Thanks for posting; otherwise, I'd never know. :) I'm very glad you, and everyone else, seem to be enjoying this one.

Actually, those first two lines are also the most famous lines of Tennyson's "Charge of the Light Brigade". They serve 3 purposes in this poem, in addition to their function as a part of the whole - 1st, they say the obvious; 2nd, they 'recall' Tennyson's poem; 3rd, they provide the foundation for this poem's paradox of reasoning through not reasoning - a human thing.

I felt like I traveled through a time worp around the universe to find an answer that can't really be answered because it would be different to everyone according to one's path, but I definitely enjoyed the trip, I learned some things and I look forward to going again....thanks!!! Nice read.

Interesting! I grew up with the knowing and hearing the first 2 lines of your poem. It's very famous. Are you the original author of that?
