There aren't many businesses out there today that can survive without a website. Even if you aren't offering your products or services online (which you should be, by the way), you probably have something on the Web that advertises your business for you. Good for you. Now, if that's true, you are probably wondering how to let customers know a little more about what you offer without cluttering your home page with facts and figures. You likely want to use your website to not only increase sales, but also to let customers and investors know a bit more about where the company is going. This is where a blog would come in. Although the word "blog" probably conjures up thoughts of annoying online diaries that teenagers use to let the world know about their parents' personal lives, the blog has really evolved since its beginnings not long ago. They can be useful business tools when used correctly, and they are quite easy to set up, but so many business owners use them in a way that makes them appear unprofessional and technologically challenged. To keep your business's blog from turning against you, take the following tips to heart.

First, remember that a blog, when used for business purposes, is not a place to relay your innermost thoughts. Don't use it to project your deepest hopes, vent your frustrations, or to beg for customers and investors. No one cares about your feelings, hopes, or beliefs when they are shopping for candles, jewelry, makeup, dog food, or whatever it is that you sell or provide. People want to know what you can do for them. Even though blogs have been traditionally associated with online journals, they can be used as letters to the world about your business's success, what makes it different, and anything you feel might add to your customer base instead. They are not meant to look like editorials written by you. Did I mention no one cares what you think?

Takeaways
  • A blog, when used for business purposes, is not a place to relay your innermost thoughts.
  • If you find yourself uncomfortable writing the blog, by all means hire a writer.
  • Don't let your business's blog sit for more than a week without being updated.
