When sports fans think of their favorite NFL team or favorite player they might think of the excitement of the game or the skill of their favorite athletes. They might not think of an organization or group of players that donate time to support charities, non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, and civic groups. Yet, players on the Cleveland Browns and team coaches do spend a lot of time helping local charities and other worthy groups through the Cleveland Browns Foundation. Some of the charities operated by the Foundation are ongoing.

The Browns players and coaches have served local citizens through a variety of programs. In 2007 the Marion Motley Scholarship gave Monique Farone of Early College High School and DeAndre Hendricks of East High School an award of $2,500 per year for four years. Both students have already been accepted into college. The award was named after Hall of Fame player, Motley. The number of applicants for the scholarships doubled from last year.

The Cleveland Browns have also given funding to student groups to create Christmas ornaments for police and firefighters, prepare food for firefighters, give blankets to firefighters, make care packages for American soldiers, make thank you notes for soldiers, provide safety bags for school teachers, donating bullet-proof vests for police dogs, volunteer at nursing homes, schools, and tutoring at schools; and in other ways.

The Cleveland Browns Foundation especially attempts to serve those at risk, focusing on children. The charity has tried to help those not helped by other charities.

Over the years the Cleveland Browns Foundation Golf Outing has generated $1,400,000 to help worthy causes.

The Cleveland Browns Foundation often gives money to Browns Backers clubs that have an active impact in the community and have the same view of serving the community as the charity. Last year the club gave three $2,000 grants.
