I wrote about PSA tests in an article called Prostate Cancer: Non-Invasive Tests that May Save Your Life. I would suggest reading that before reading this if you want a full understanding of this issue. PSA tests should be performed on every man over the age of 40 and certainly 50. They measure the likelihood of your having prostate cancer. Many men over the age of 50, 60 and up have prostate problems. These problems manifest themselves in many ways including having to urinate a lot and having some urgency. Many have large prostates which my husband does.

He has seen two urologists; had 5 biopsies over the year sand one consultation. Tthree doctors suggested three different ways to relieve his symptoms. Some would provide a better quality of life; another may cure the problem. I take notes when my husband comes back from the doctors' offices and have been doing a lot of reading over the years. This is my take on prostate treatments. This is not inclusive of every treatment. There is a litiny of treatments. I'm just discussing those that have been discussed with him and that are not alternative treatments.

Medications

Researchers at the National Institue of Health have been doing studies trying to find a way to shrink if not stop the prostrate becoming larger with medication. The FDA has approved six drugs to relieve symptoms that happen with an enlarged prostate. My husband takes Flomax. This drug relieves the symptom of BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia which in English is an enlarged prostate. The prostate should be the size of a walnut. As a comparison my husband's is the size of an orange.

Great information! Keeping on top of the PSA test is important for early detection/prevention. Some of these treatments were used with my husband's Bladder Cancer years ago. He was 47 when he passed. Keeping information like this out there will help others. Wonderful job you are doing with these articles.

Wonderful information. Thanks a lot for this. Sorry about your hubby's problems. I can sure relate to this one because of my hubby too, but he is 80.
