Like it or not, the time has come. Your daughter's breasts have arrived, and in a package much larger than you expected. Is your daughter less than happy about her newest additions? Breasts, particularly large ones, can be a sensitive issue for a pubescent girl. Not sure you're prepared to handle this issue? Read on:

First and Foremost, Be Cool

Not every daughter wants to discuss her breasts with her mom. Sure one day you two will joke about her massive rack, but now is not that day. As a child, my mom, who is not a busty woman, would exclaim exasperatedly about how big my 12-year-old breasts were, oblivious to my discomfort. If there is any chance that you and your daughter can tackle this issue, you must remain cool. Don't get offended or frustrated if your daughter won't open up to you about her breasts. Don't get mad if she has made it clear that she doesn't want to go bra shopping with you. Be woman enough to accept it. You and your daughter will share many special moments, its ok if a discussion about her breasts isn't one of them. She might be more comfortable bra shopping with an older sibling or friend. Perhaps you have a female family friend that is pretty hip and would be willing to help.

Get Her a Good Bra

Whether you take her bra shopping or someone else does, make sure she gets a good bra. Cute bras are fun, but they aren't always the best choice for big breasts. You may have to shop around to find a bra that is both sturdy and pleasing to her eye. As a young girl in a small town, I had some pretty hideous bras. My only shopping option was Kmart and their selection was slim, to say the least. Nowadays, you can go online to find carriers of bigger bras.

Buy Her a Sports Bra

Your daughter doesn't have to be athletic to warrant needing a sports bra. In fact, the lack of a sturdy sports bra could be what is keeping her from playing sports. At the tender age of 12, after a softball game, my best friend's mom informed me that it was time I got a sports bra. Don't let someone else make that call. Be sure to get your daughter a sports bra that is sized by her actual size (i.e. 36D), as opposed to small, medium or large.

You are absolutely correct about your advice. I don't have firsthand knowledge of this but do have a relative who had this problem. It can be literally painful (as the actress who played Punky Brewster noted before having reduction surgery) and comments can be hard to handle. What a great topic!

Another fantastic article, Shanika, way to go! Sensitivity is definitely required here. I'm petite with large breasts and as a teenager I always felt awkward about this and couldn't wear all the cute camisole tops and other things I wanted to wear. Worse still, my mom used to tease me and tell me that if my breasts were any larger I would fall over backwards, lol. She was just trying to be funny, but skinny and petite girls with large chests can be sensitive about these things.

I guess I never thought of how difficult this could be. It's like when someone complains of being too skinny - it really is an issue but the majority of people wanting to maintain or lose, don't see it that way. Helpful advice!
