Learning to play the guitar incorrectly can result in a wide array of bad habits. These habits can be small problems that cause you to miss notes or misplay a song, or they can be major problems that can actually hinder you from progressing and learning to play better. Whatever bad habits you may have developed, the right combination of structured online lessons and videos will help you learn to overcome them. Here are some common tips to help you get started:

1. Stop playing the songs in which the bad habits manifest. Often, people learn to play a song by sight or sound rather than by the notes or finger placement. If these songs are temporarily removed and replaced by solid online lessons and well structured instruction, the bad habits can disappear with them.

2. Why have these bad habits developed at all? If there is a particular reason for any of your bad habits while playing, pinpoint that reason and remove the offending action from your routine. If you learned to play while watching others, or have been using poorly written tabs, remove these elements and find good online lessons to reteach the basics.

3. Find your weak points and work on them. Often bad habits are only a result of ignoring specific weak points. If you have trouble with a certain kind of note or never learned to alternate picking, start with basic lessons and videos to cover these topics.

4. Once the bad habits have been discovered, analyzed, and removed from your guitar playing routine, do not let them return. Often it becomes easy to forget the correct way to do something. You may play a familiar old song or be playing around somewhere, but if you fail to use the new techniques your lessons have taught you, you may end up back where you started.

Eventually, by recognizing, removing, and remaining consistent in overcoming your bad habits, you can learn to play the guitar the proper way. Online lessons are built for both beginners and veterans who are trying to restart their learning process. Whichever camp you are in, remember that your talent is the same regardless of how you learned; it just might take a while to remove the bad habits that build up.

Good article, I always find that playing different styles help to reduce my apathy. One day jazz, the next bluegrass, the next rock, and so on...
