Travel around the holidays is inevitable. Whether traveling locally or cross country, travelers should plan their trips well in order to keep everyone entertained, happy, and in the Christmas spirit. Travel the day after Christmas doesn't have to be a stressful experience for travelers if they take these precautions.

My husband has offered the first tip for travel the day after Christmas: Don't do it. After years of driving and flying to see everyone, he's worn out! However, if it isn't possible for you to skip the travel the day after Christmas, the rest of these tips should help you have a successful journey.

Get a good night's sleep. Well rested children and parents make for happier travelers.

Be realistic when planning holiday travel. It may not be possible to see and please everyone. Don't overdo it, especially if you have to travel with children. Even if you are headed on vacation, instead of to visit relatives, remember that the holidays are a busy travel time and an exhausting time of year for children. Keeping this in mind when planning your holiday travel can alleviate a lot of problems.

Allow children to pack a small backpack with a few of their favorite Christmas presents to take with them. They will be much more cooperative and happy if they don't have to leave all of their new toys at home.

Invest in a portable DVD player. If you end up stuck in traffic or in an airport, you'll be pleased that you spent this $100.

Pack suitcases with some of everyone's clothes in each bag. Lost luggage happens. Packing this way means that if one suitcase makes it, you'll have some clothes for everyone.

Monitor the weather. With wintry weather already taking hold of the Midwest and northeast, be sure to check the forecast of your departure and destination cities before leaving the house. When in doubt, call airlines or consider pushing off any driving travel until the following day. Safety comes first.

Hehe, I agree. Don't do it! I remember once I had to get home from my grandmother's house the day after Christmas. Halfway home one the three hour drive it slowly dawned on me that my gas tank was empty and there were NO gas stations open! It was horrible!

I wouldn't want to travel on Boxing Day either if I didn't have to. So your husband's suggestion was really spot on! Sophie
