We're headed into a very newsworthy year, 2008. There are some upcoming events that will be significant pieces of history.

The first that comes to mind for many is the 2008 United States Presidential Election. After having the same president in office for two terms, it's always a pretty big deal to trade up for a new one, right? No matter what your personal opinion is about who is on their way out. And this next year will prove to hold a pivotal election, at that. We have two very strong Democratic candidates in the race that, if either is elected, will make history as being the first elected president who is not a white male. There are some strong Republican candidates competing as well. January's primaries will certainly liven up the race that will make daily headlines through 2008.

The 2008 Olympics are being held in Bejing, and for those of you not previously aware, these are going to be controversial games, indeed. In fact, the 2008 games are being referred to, by some as the "Genocide Olympics." The reason being? The short answer is that China, where the games will be held, is the country that is financing the attack on the people of Darfur, because they are the country buying the oil from the region in the Sudan that is controlled by those who are performing the attacks - it is an "ethnic cleansing" scenario. China, in addition to the oil situation, are also the country from which these rebel groups purchase their weapons with which they are terrorizing so many.

Something is going to come of the sub-prime lending debacle. Homes are being foreclosed right and left, and companies who were involved via investment into the mortgage market, well, they are disappearing too. The housing industry is hurting in a big bad way. Now, for the layman, it's anyone's guess as to what is going to come of it. But one thing is for sure, this will remain a hot topic well into the year of 2008.
