Blocks of wood are so cheap at craft stores and there are lots of great decor items you can make with them. One is a simple design used to hold a candle but the arrangement is very impressive upon completion. You’ll need several blocks of wood, in a size that suits your candle, but make sure the wooden blocks are equal in size and fairly thick. The wooden blocks don’t have to be square. They can be oval, round, or other shapes. Don’t try mixing the ovals with the squares, or the circles with the ovals, though, as they look awkward.

Sand the blocks of wood, where necessary, before beginning this project. The edges should all be smooth and there should be no splintering. Wooden crafting blocks are often rough and may require a few minutes of sanding per block.

Paint the wooden blocks, stain them, or leave them natural, depending upon your decor theme. New paints let you create metallic designs, pearl finishes, and even glitter creations for holidays. And you don't have to paint each block the same color - make the candle holder brilliant by painting each wooden piece a different color. Or, choose two colors and take turns painting each block one of the colors. After the paints have dried begin gluing the wooden pieces together with wood glue. Stack them perfectly for a block candle holder, or position each one off-kilt for a different design entirely.

Make the wooden block arrangements any height you want. Tall ones look great for buffet tables, shorter ones are fabulous in the bathroom. Make several different sizes and give them as a set for a gift.

There are many different ways to decorate the wooden candle holders - if you don’t want to leave them as-is. Use craft wire in vertical designs, all the way around the candle, for a more rustic look to a natural or stained set of blocks. Or, glue on small wooden trinkets from the craft store, such as kittens, apples, bumble bees, turtles, or even initials.
