The Carolina is a pariah dog, which was created by nature, not man. Subject to Darwin's theory of evolution, these feral packs roamed through the southeastern parts of the United States for thousands of years. They were primarily found in the forests, and swampy regions of Georgia and South Carolina. Over the last thirty years or so, breeders have captured, studied, and refined this canine. Although not recognized by the AKC, the Carolina Dog is registered with the United Kennel Club and the American Rare Breed Association.

If you crossed a German Shepherd with a Dingo, the Carolina Dog would be the result. It has a somewhat narrow wedge-shaped skull, and tapering muzzle which comes to a gradual stop. Large, bat like ears stand erect. It has a well developed chest, and athletic build. Dark, almond shaped eyes seem to constantly remain alert. The first impression one gets is that of an agile hunter. The Carolina bears a feral, untamed appearance which is only enhanced by its quirky tail. The coat is short, and dense, with an undercoat present. Fur comes in all shades of ginger, light red, and cream. Light markings may be present.

The Carolina has proved itself to be a unique combination of wild domestication as it responds well to its human family while retaining primitive behaviors such as pack hierarchy and cooperative hunting. These dogs are robust, intelligent, and athletic. Their resourceful minds put mainstream canine intelligence to shame. The Carolina is quite the clever creature.

Breeders are surprised at how well the Carolina has adapted to domestication. It possesses an easy going nature, is loyal to 'its pack', and makes an exceptional family pet. On the flip side of the coin, due to its wilder instincts, the Carolina requires extensive socialization at an early age. Otherwise, it will be prone to extreme shyness around people, as well as a general dislike of handling. So coddle, hug, and pass the pup around!
