Domain name registration is the first step in owning a website. A domain name is a unique address in the virtual world just like a unique address in the real world.. In the real world if a letter is sent or a person looks up a particular address they will always arrive at the same unique place. Similarly in the virtual world of the internet if you type in a particular domain name you will always arrive at the same site carrying that domain name. Imagine what would happen if you typed google.com and arrived at the yahoo site instead. Every time you type a yahoo domain into your browser you will always arrive at the same yahoo site that the domain name is pointing to at that time. That is why domain name registration is an important step in the website building and owning process.

A domain name consists of two parts the primary domain and the secondary domain. the primary domain is indicated by the extension like .com, .net, .org. etc. The secondary domain is the actual name of the site. The combination gives a unique address. So yoursite.com is different from yoursite.net and both are different from yoursite.org, each being a unique domain name or web address. Because you have to pay for domain name registration and you are stuck with yourdomain name for at least one year it is important to choose the domain name wisely before registering a domain name. There are two approaches. One approach is to brand it. If you already own a brand it is obviously advantageous to use that brand name as your domain name. In case you want to build a strong brand you can use a catchy name that is easy to remember. The second approach is to include a highly searched keyword term relevant to the product or service you are offering, in your domain name. For example if you are having a website about dog training your domain name would be www.dogtraining.com or www.dog-training.com or a variation of these depending on the availability.
