In this article we continue the series of general tips on how to write a successful short story in the fiction genre. In the last article the outline and startup process was analyzed. Now we move to style, plot development, character development, and overall flow. These are each areas that new authors should consider in creating their short stories.

Style is something that develops with you as a writer. Often we are not completely conscious of our unique style. As you write, though, try to be conscious of the fashion in which you convey the story and the characters. Elements of style include sentence structure, description of action and dialogue, as well as overall flow of ideas. Read good writing often to expand your knowledge of self in this regard. Remember to write plainly - avoid trying to imitate others because it is very noticeable if forced.

Plot development is a key element of your short story. Avoid predictability. Exciting writing is fresh, new, and unpredictable. Certainly, there are some broad techniques that should be considered (implementing complications and multiple angles), but a predictable outcome or event is normally not enjoyed by the reader. Some plot developments that are predictable do succeed, however, such as the "death" and reemergence of a central or likable character (see Gandalf in Lord of the Rings or Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows).

Character development is crucial. Your main characters and maybe even some minor characters should change in some way throughout the course of the story. This is an often-overlooked aspect for new writers. Too often the plot is focused on too much, leading to a lack of character growth. Make character growth realized, but not stated. When your characters grow in tandem with developments in the story, your creation will flow that much better.
