Really Worth the Rush?

As another holiday season is almost over, I'm still struck by the behaviors of others at this time of year. Yes, there are those who give to the needy, give to Toys for Tots, and give to the Salvation Army bell-ringers. Yet, what exactly is it that possesses these same people who so freely give, when they are inside the store or in the parking lot? These same people, who give so freely, suddenly turn into selfish monsters that shove past other people, cut others off for parking spaces, and act like they have to be first in line. For example, I was watching the morning news and disgusted to see a video of two women having a very physical altercation over a parking space. Is this really necessary?

My issues with people have been going on for years. I respect everyone until I have been disrespected by them. I will talk to anyone I meet and love to learn about the lives of others. However, on the eve of Thanksgiving, I was almost hit by a car while walking to my car. How could this happen? The driver had seen a parking spot four spaces behind him, threw it into reverse, and nearly hit me. Why? Just for a better parking spot. If he had not jumped out of the car and rushed into the store, I would have asked him if what he needed in the store was worth running me over. But, as is my understanding and forgiving nature, I just let it go.

As I follow a different religion than most, perhaps that is what makes me different from others. I take the time to enjoy every moment of every day. I take my time driving into town, while others whiz past me like there is no tomorrow. I allow others to go ahead of me in lines or when at a four-way stop. I do not rush, for I may miss an opportunity, either to help someone else or help myself. I do not want to look back on my life and know that I missed the small things because I was rushing about. If you do not enjoy your life, then what is the point of living it?

I don't think it's religion why people do things differently because all religious sects are to respect everyone. I couldn't agree with this more. One time, I was dropping my bags as I was opening my door in the parking lot and some car impatiently wants my spot, urging me to hurry up. I went over and asked them if it would hurt them really bad to park one or two spots over (those spots were open!). I usually don't make confrontments, but society is so rude today. They said they dont know why I am concerned about it and I told them that I have a broken arm and you are holding up traffic and rushing me. They could care less. I am really sick of the rude society but we have no choice but to do what is right to set the example. Thanks for sharing this one.

One more thing, how come every dang Church in the country wants to be so generous during the months of December but you can't get them to volunteer for anything the rest of the year. But those are the 'nice" people. (not interested in certian evolution...) the feel good Christain that do care who they run over the rest of the time. Geeze I have had to deal with these nuts wanting to take God out of 12 Step Recovery and replace it with "Chrsitan concepts..." Well if the had done there homework they would have know that the 12 Steps are Christain concepts...go figure...

Spider Lady say Bravo for good article. I have been so battered an pursecuted by those who call themself Christian this year that I could briefly reflect on the dark side. But as Jesus said, forgive them for they know not what they do. The hurd mentality in this county is appaling... yesterday most of the county paid homage to the Great God of the superbowl... Yes, virgina we have billions of dollars for football games, but our mentally ill war vets sleep in the gutters...aall thans to the kind hearts of our Chritian majority.... okay, so I will get off the soap box...

When I was younger, I used to rush around a lot. Now I feel that there is nowhere worth getting that isn't worth getting there safely. You are right, people spend way too much time rushing around, and only help others when they are made to feel like they should. This is a great article! Love and Blessings, Wendy

Great insight! I think everyone should look at life and appreciate every moment of every day too... people are just too busy with themselves and doing stuff the fastest anymore.

I avoided shopping as much as possible, My son about got run over by a woman walking out of the exit of a store and he said what the hell lady? She said I am in a hurry, no excuse me or anything, people can act like animals especially over greed.

What a great article. We all need to slow down and smile and talk to people. Like you said it might have made a difference in their lives that moment too. Happy Holidays :)

I was particularly irritable (or the B word) this holiday and knew it. Before we did our shopping, I made a list of needed items (I usually fly by the seat of my pants.) and vowed to smile and be pleasant to everyone. I nearly got run over by carts at each turn but smiled and said excuse me, allowed carts to go ahead of me, and tried to be massively pleasant...Guess what, everyone stopped for a moment and was just as nice back. What a great experience.

These are telling observations. When I was a child, I remember the holiday season as such an exciting time in public places- everyone saying Merry Christmas to strangers, smiles galore, people going out of their way to be extra kind and open doors or hold packages, making a point to drop some coins in the bell ringer's cup... People today are really missing out on some of the best of what life has to offer in their haste to get what they want when they want.
