It's completely natural (and healthy) to want to use the New Year as an opportunity for self-development. After all, it's a new year, a new beginning and psychologically the best time to try new things or reignite unrequited goals.

One of the best ways to succeed in accomplishing is a goal is to put yourself in a position where you can maximize the greatest level of resource and talent. Below are seven critical aspects that will help you in positioning yourself to succeed in reaching your goal:

1. What's one thing you can focus on improving this year? Yes, I know that you want to lose weight, find the partner of your dreams, travel the world and make a seven figure salary-but that's not realistically going to happen in one year if you're not on the brink of accomplishing them already.

It's tempting to want to overhaul your entire life, but it's simply not realistic and chances are the "ideal" life you want to have is going to require serious investments of time, energy, money and other resources.

If you haven't had much success in the past with changing your life, give yourself a break and just focus on one goal. Give it all your attention and let it take root before you even think of moving on to something else.

Ask yourself, what are you truly, deeply, madly passionate about doing with your life--what are you willing to spend real time and serious money on achieving? Rid your mind of excess fantasy and be willing to go for broke on making the most important goal of this New Year happen for you.

2. Be specific about your goal. Generally, any well written goal will answer what you want to accomplish (include numbers in answering this question-like I want to lose 10 pounds), how you want to do it, when you want to accomplish the goal, and why. The first three are more obvious, the last is not-but "the why" absolutely important.

It sheds some light on who you are as a person-so be honest with answering why. If you're losing 25 pounds because you want to look good in a pair of jeans than be honest with that belief-and find out what it says about you-without judgment.
