The Medical College of Wisconsin Has Turned Dogs into Pigs

Being that I am never one to give up on a cause, I have kept up on the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and their dog labs. These dog labs, which are only used in a handful of schools across the country, are meant to teach and better educate medical students. The problem with this theory is that these dog labs do not produce better results in students when compared to those who opt out of the activity and use modern technology to learn the same techniques. It is because of this, that schools such as Harvard and Yale, have quit using these dog labs years ago. You can view the horrendous sight that the Medical College of Wisconsin is promoting at this Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) video.

I have previously written two articles on this terrible practice, College Promoted Animal Abuse: Medical College of Wisconsin Dog Labsand Medical College of Wisconsin Dog Labs Update, and am sad to report that awareness still needs to be raised for the poor animals. MCW, in their infinite wisdom and caring, have decided that that it is their power to choose the importance of certain animals lives. In February, 2008, the Medical College of Wisconsin will be using pig labs instead of dog labs.

Well this makes everything alright, doesn't it? Pigs are not exactly the cute and loveable animals that man's best friend is. That must be why MCW expects animal rights activists, the PCW, and simple animals lovers (such as myself), to just stand back and allow these archaic practices to continue. The facts are that pigs are very intelligent animals, and have shown that they can be more intelligent than dogs, and are very sensitive creatures.

Right about now you may be asking yourself, "What can I do?" Well, you are in luck. I actually have some ideas and suggestions that may come in handy when trying to show that you care about life.

If they genetically grow wings on pigs then the whole "if pig could fly" saying gets put in the dumper.

I hope you all are Vegetarians, not diabetic, or never need a new heart valve. If you do, you are going to look quite hypocritical when you come crawling back to science/medicine for product obtained from pigs.

So sad, and also not necessary in light of technical advances.

It isn't, I suspect, that humans are next - but that it just hasn't hit the news yet. All technological 'gains' that lead to our ability to do new things is not necessarily a good thing. INteresting and frightening article. David

Thanks for brining this to everyone's attention. Hopefully with enough reconginition and uproar this place will discontinue animal testing indefinitely. Great article!

About 20 years ago a number of LSU veterinary doctoral students were dismissed because they refused to kill the pigs that were part of an experiment, having become convinced of the pigs' intelligence and having become very attached to them. Very sad that experiments continue on these animals. Kudos to you for bringing this story forward.
