Suddenly soft expectation,

Swept against me with velvety cheeks.

Youthful lips that promised-

Anything they could link memory to.

I was the one, who stood,

Facing-

The horrible truths where they lived.

I am the sole survivor,

Of everything that I have to give.

The rain has returned for the season,

Scrubbing at sidewalks,

At avenues.

You look so very tired dear-

After all this life that you have been through.

Come sit with me here by the window.

The candles are keeping guard.

And we will all protect you,

From the monsters in the yard.
