God has friends in enemy territory that He is waiting for the right time to rescue them. From before the time that God created the earth, He had it in mind to bring people of all kinds of backgrounds and nationalities into the kingdom of God. The people destined for the kingdom of God start out living in the kingdom of Satan. Satan is the adversary of God and people. God's plan that people of all backgrounds and nationalities would be in His kingdom was not fully revealed until the time when the New Testament section of the Bible was written according to Ephesians 3:5-6. Joshua lived in Old Testament times. Joshua was not privileged to know this plan, but he got a foretaste of it in the Rahab story.
The name "Joshua" can also be translated as the name "Jesus". Jesus Christ and God the Father are one. In the story of Rahab in the book of Joshua 2, Joshua plays a role like God the Father in that God the Father has children that He wants to protect and cultivate, and He puts together a plan of protection and cultivation. His plan centers around His Son Jesus Christ. Joshua sent scouts to Jericho. The scouts sent to check out Jericho are like the Holy Spirit. The scouts had a message and a mission. The message is the kingdom of God is coming and the kingdom of Satan is getting ready to be defeated. The mission is to cooperate with God in fulfilling the message.
