Have you have ever wanted to revisit the old days of PC gaming but was not sure how or where to get these old games , your time has come. DOSBox is a free application that runs almost all the old school DOS based PC games which have become classics and best of all , the games are free also. Free you say ? Is this legal ? Yes it is, abandonware is software that has lost it's copy write so no one owns the rights to the game anymore , so it is free and legal to own. Almost all DOS based PC games are in the abandonware status.

DOSBox itself is easy to get a hold of and is very small in file size. The newest version of DOSBox is version 0.72 and is compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux and can be found on their web page http://www.dosbox.com. Installing DOSBox is easy and painless and takes no real configuration to setup, it takes less than 5 minutes. Once you have DOSBox downloaded and installed on to your hard drive you must go find the games or "Abandonware".

King's Quest, Castles, Eye of the Beholder, Civilization, Doom, Rise of the Dragon and almost every other DOS based PC game can be found on abandonware web sites all over the web! 80's DOS Games , AbandaCagabra , Abanbon 5000, Abandon Gamesroom, Abandoneer, The House of Games, House of the Underdogs, Old School DOS Games are just a few of the many web sites you can find with Abandonware.

Once you download a game you must extract it into a folder on your hard drive and mount it with DOSBox. Mounting is DOSBox is easy and very user friendly , at least as user friendly as DOS can be. If you had the game Doom on your desktop under a user name Bob in windows you would mount the folder by typing, mount c c:UsersBobDesktopDoom then hit enter. That command would mount the Doom folder to the C: drive of your DOSBox emulation, then you just change to the C: drive and run the .EXE file.

Takeaways
  • DOSBox is free
  • Abandonware is free
  • 100 % Legal
