With the icy weather sweeping north eastern Missouri tonight, road conditions can quickly decline. With the threat of black ice and other dangerous driving conditions, motorist in north eastern Missouri should take special precautions. Allow extra time for any travel plans you may have and drive accordingly. Fuel up before trips to be certain that you will have heat in case you are stranded.
This has an added advantage of providing extra weight to assist with traction on slippery surfaces. Be certain that someone who isn't going to be with you knows where you are going, along with a general idea of your route of travel. It is a good idea to give this person a call before you leave and provide them with an estimated time of when you should arrive at your destination. This is an excellent way of making sure that you won't be stranded alone on the side of the road for more than an hour or so. Additionally, it is a wise idea to carry a cellular phone with you when traveling in icy conditions, as well as an emergency kit supplied with bottled water, snack food and blankets.
While cold and icy winter weather is hard on all of us, the elderly suffer special dangers in these times. If you can find it in your heart, check on your elderly neighbor or friends and make certain that they have made it into the house safely and that they have adequate heat. If you are out and about, offer to spread some ice melting product on their walks or check their mail for them. While a fall on a frozen sidewalk may be painful for a younger person, it can be fatal for an elderly individual.
