If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), then you have probably already realized that it can be difficult to find foods that will not bother your stomach. One meal that has the potential to cause IBS-related symptoms is breakfast. Here, we will take a much closer look at some of the different foods that may irritate the stomach of someone with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Breakfast Foods That May Irritate IBS Sufferers - Pancakes or Waffles

Depending on how you eat your pancakes or waffles, they may bother your stomach if you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This is particularly true if you smother them in butter, syrup or jam. All three of these pancake and waffle toppers tend to be too rich for IBS sufferers. In order to reduce the stomach pain that you may experience, you can try to limit the amount that you use. Sometimes, however, you may find it best to avoid eating pancakes, waffles or anything else that may require these toppings (such as toast or french toast) altogether.

Breakfast Foods That May Irritate IBS Sufferers - Orange Juice

Orange juice is undoubtedly one of the most common beverages that people drink with their breakfasts. Unfortunately for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, much like the fruit, orange juice is highly acidic. What this means is that it is more likely to bother the stomach of an IBS sufferer than other juices may. However, there are other juices which are also very acidic, such as apple juice. If you have IBS, the best thing that you can do in order to avoid stomach upset from orange juice is completely avoid the beverage.

Breakfast Foods That May Irritate IBS Sufferers - Milk

Many people who have IBS also experience symptoms similar to those of lactose intolerance when they consume milk or dairy. For this reason, drinking a glass of milk with your breakfast is really not the best idea if you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. If you are going to be having milk with your cereal, the best thing that you can do is reduce the amount of milk that you would normally put in it so that it doesn't bother your stomach.

Thanks very much Jody Morse. I am still trying to figure out what my digestive problems are. And it's looking more and more like IBS. Even my doctor mentioned IBS when I told of my symptoms. I google'd "irritable bowel syndrome and orange juice" and this article came up. I drank orange juice *and* an omelet. If I have IBS, that is a recipe for disaster! It's very hard to diagnose these problems, but I'm starting to see connections now. I was really worried it could be colon cancer, but I really don't have any symptoms of it other than the diarrhea. And I'm a bit young to get colon cancer as well. We'll see what the doctor says next time...

Good info. I find that if I add fresh bananas or blueberries to my buckwheat pancakes, that they don't even need any syrup or butter. I actually made these for breakfast today.
