Senior adults strive to maintain independence and mobility as long as possible. If you are approaching retirement, or you are caring for an aging parent, it is important to find ways in which to boost physical function and flexibility so as to promote long term independence and long term health. For many senior adults, the regular involvement in a fitness program provides for a unique opportunity in which to manage health and improve mobility.

Fitness programs for senior adults are increasingly more common in gyms and fitness centers across the United States. Because there are age-related changes in the joint and musculoskeletal system, fitness programs provide for an improvement in mobility, strength and range of motion. When considering a fitness program, it is best to find one that caters to an older population and the unique opportunities for fitness that are designed for this age group.

As part of the fitness program, a core strengthening program will be important. While senior adults rarely engage in the use of exercise equipment and free weights, the fitness program must find creative ways in which to strengthen the core naturally. With the use of programs such as Tai Chi, Pilates and Yoga, this core strengthening may be rather simple to achieve.

Of the many fitness programs for seniors, Pilates may provide the greatest health benefit. Because Pilates focuses on core muscle strengthening, improving muscle alignment and promoting mobility within the spine, seniors benefit greatly from this type of fitness program. In fact, after engaging in Pilates exercises for a few weeks, there can be a marked improvement in posture and an increase in joint stability. Incorporated into fitness programs that engage breathing exercises, and the use of traditional resistance and balance exercise, the perfect program may provide for a greater motivation in the senior adult's attendance and compliance in the program.
