Choosing whether a dance class is appropriate for your child involves much thinking. While this can be a fun and rewarding experience, there are other aspects of involving your child in extra-curricular activities that should be considered. Many questions are likely running through your mind. This guide should serve as a help to answer some of those questions.

How many days/hours will your child need to commit to a dance class?
Dance classes will meet regularly and before committing your child to them, you should know the schedule. Some will meet for 30 minutes at a time, while others may meet for longer periods, even hours at a time. Some may be more days per week than your child or family can handle. This information should be thoroughly considered before signing your child up for dance classes.

Will a dance class interfere with your child's schoolwork?
Some children will tire easily when taking dance lessons, so if your child tires easily, it would be best to choose dance classes that are offered on the weekends or school holidays. Sending a tired child to school too often could lead to poor grades. Also, if your child often has a large amount of homework, dance classes during the week could prevent your child from doing a thorough job on that. If your child is in home school, this is likely not much of an issue, as the assignments can usually be scheduled around dance classes so that your child will be fully alert during school time.

Does your child enjoy dancing?
Enjoyment of dancing is a very important factor when considering dance classes. This may seem obvious, but it isn't always so. If your child does not already enjoy dancing, putting your child in a dance class may not be the best idea. Instead, consider immersing your child into something he or she enjoys better. While dancing can certainly be enriching and fulfilling, not everyone will enjoy it. Never force an interest on a child.

You're very welcome Quiche. I hope it helped. Tyler, thanks for reading. All children who take dance classes are not necessarily doing so to achieve a dance career. They might just enjoy it. Even if they do pursue it as a career, they should still be encouraged. I believe a child should be taught to make smart choices, but should always be encouraged to work toward the career they aspire to, no matter what that may be. :-)

Dancing typically doesn't sound like a stable career.

Great info! I think parents don't realize how time consuming and expensive dance lessons can be.

I always wanted to take dance as a kid, but we didn't have the money. It seems like a great way for kids to get exercise and have fun at the same time, plus they are learning a skill that may be handy in the future. You never know, they could be a famous dancer one day.

time commitment is so important, but so easy to forget. we're learning this quickly with our five year old. thanks for the info!

Great advice. I took lessons as a kid and if my children want to I'll certainly look into it. There are two dance studios close to my home.

Thanks Jamie. I think you're right about the style and environment. Our kids are on a praise dancing team (Christian dancing) and they also practice hip-hop dance on their own. :-)

Great topic Momie. Also, I agree with you that not all boys who take dance classes get teased. It probably depends a great deal on the style of dance and the environment that the child is in.

Thanks so much everyone. Wow Kim, what a compliment. E, our boys like football and actually one of them is also in dance. He doesn't get teased, but I suppose it could happen. He's really good though, especially at hip-hop dancing, so his friends actually cheer him on. For those that get teased, the best advice I can give is to encourage them not to give up on it if they really enjoy it and feel like they couldn't be happy without it.
