Twill is a fabric that we wear everyday of our lives. It can be soft and airy as well as thick and durable depending on how it is woven during the production process. A twill fabric is a fabric that is woven to have ribs on both sides. This type of weave in a fabric is referred to as herringbone. Most fabrics when woven have a front and back side that are noticeably different. A twill fabric however, has a front side that is called a technical face, and a back side that is called technical back. There is no up or down directions when it comes to twill fabrics. While both sides of twill fabric are durable, the front technical side is the most durable as well as the most attractive.
Most twill fabrics will not have printed designs. When fabrics have various designs, these fabrics are on plain type of weaves. Harris tweed is a twill fabric that is considered a fine fabric that this hand woven in Harris Scottland. In addition twill fabrics are soil and stain resistance. If by chance a stain gets on twill fabric it is much less apparent than if a stain gets on a plain fabric.
When twill fabric is produced the weave of the thread runs with two threads going one direction and a third thread running across these two threads in the opposite direction. There a various qualities of twill thread fabrics and the larger the tread count the more durable the fabric will be. In addition the greater the thread count the more warm the twill fabric will be. Twill fabric with less thread counts are softer and more pliable than those with higher thread counts. A common twill fabric will have thread that is woven with a diagonal line that runs upward from left to right at a 45-degree angle.
