Eraserhead: A Film Noir Cult Classic
I was thinking about the cult classic Film Noir Eraserhead this morning. I know a lot of people define it in a particular way; diving into the realm of sin and consequence - and suicide. The beauty of interpretation with any David Lynch film like Eraserhead is that
there are no clear and concise answers. I have to admit, I feel very differently than most of the people I've talked to.
To me, the movie Eraserhead was a dream half lodged in perception and half in "what if." What if I had a freak baby? What if the neighbor was a nympho? What if my wife could not handle motherhood. . . And all of this stems to those worms you see in Eraserhead that everyone wants to call "sin." I saw them as, not sin, but paranoia and variable.
When a paranoid or variable thought is released in Eraserhead, (worm or phallus-like structure) the mind (workman) goes to work. As you notice, thought (work) sometimes scars the mind (workman.) He is propelled by variables and paranoia (worms) which are seen everywhere in the Eraserhead dreamscape. (Notice, there is a lack of reality, therefore it is a dreamscape.)
Some of the images represented certain aspects of life:
The tiny chicken at the in-laws (people with little to offer, little depth, perhaps Mary herself.)
Bleeding things (any thoughts that will resonate later)
Worms (paranoia)
Girl in the Radiator (pill, doll, or mother figure - I'd guess pill.)
Neighbor (risk and fantasy)
Baby (Anything that is brought into existance with consequence that must be dealt with. Since it is bound by bandages, it might represent a repressed thought.)
Doors (Opportunity)
Radiator ( Escape)
Girlfriend (relationships, specifically Henry's lack of place and control in one)
Grandmother (wasted efforts in the name of purpose)
Mother in Law (lack of cohesion, conflicting thoughts)
Eraserhead (easiest symbol; thoughts can be edited, perception can be edited)
Phallus that pops head out (somewhat sexual, but mainly paranoia)
