You don't always get what you pay for, when it comes to sending your kid to a private school. I should know, because I went to a Catholic high school for grades 9 and 10, and to a Catholic grade school from grades 1 through 6. And I was so deprived.

But I never realized that until I was older.

That blasted Catholic school offered no extracurricular activities! Except a girls' softball team that was a new thing, implemented when I was in the fourth grade, I believe. But that was it.

There were absolutely no other extracurricular activities, unless you want to consider the annual science fair one. Now, maybe things have changed since I was in grade school, and maybe today, every single Catholic grade school has lots of extracurricular activities. On the other hand, I know for a fact that when I was in grade school, all the public grade schools offered many an extracurricular activity.

The athlete in me remained buried all through grade school. When a kid is surrounded by sedation, how are they supposed to have the resolve and initiative to go hunting for athletic challenges? The only sports I thought existed at that age, was kickball during gym class.

The high school had about 900 students and was an all-girl school. There was no athletic department! But they did have a soccer team and softball team. I think they had a volleyball team. But they never had a track team until I was in the ninth grade. So they were definitely underdeveloped in the sports arena. They did have a drama department.

But extracurricular activities aren't the only issue here. The kids at a private school are no better mannered than kids at a public high school. Some parents tend to think that public high schools are rough and full of tough kids.

But this all-girls high school was teaming with back-stabbing, gossiping, vicious girls -- vicious with their mouths, that is. Though I never witnessed a fist fight, the verbal assaults were rampant. There were a lot of mean girls. There were girls who habitually got bad grades. Their parents were throwing the tuition money out the window.

yeah i go to all guys catholic schools right outside chicago, but we have plenty of extracurriculars (sports, band, acting, etc) The school itself is kinda shabby, not like those rich uppity schools on the north shore. We got carpeting and small lockers that u cant fit other people into without decapitating them in the process. The tuition is $8000-8500, something my mom wasnt too happy about. I kinda wonder what wouldve happened if i went to a co-ed school, but that why im looking forward to college :)

I totally agree with your perspective on private catholic schools. Currently I attend an all girls school that is inadequate in academics, sports, and extracurriculars. The teachers in my school are ill equipped and very poor in their teaching skills. Only three of our teachers are pretty decent and our softball team is our major accomplishment. Half of the girls in my school are unmotivated and lazy. Most of their time is devoted to Myspace and just getting by in school. Drama is abundant and effort is rare. The diocese my schools belongs to does not seem to pay attention to us since WASC came and heard the students' complaints yet no improvements have been seen. The main problem is that no one cares about the students. This is clearly seen in the low standards that the teachers have set for us and the poorly qualified teachers that are instituted.

actually i go to a all girls private catholic school(11th grade) right now and its packed full of sports. we have stuff like swim team and basketball and to many things to list. maybe it's b/c i go to marymount in california and the tuition is like 23,000 and that's why we have alot of stuff going on. we even have non competitive and competitive p.e. class. it might just be the school that you went to, but before you go around bashing private schools b/c you didn't have alot of activties check around with other people. but i do agree with you about how girls attack more verbally but that's better than a fist fight. besides it's only a couple of mean girls anyway and everyone else just gets along. i'm sorry i have to disagree with you but private is definitly better than public for lots of reasons.

My college roommate attended an all-girls Catholic high school and wasn't impressed. I do programs for kids in public and private schools and surpringly my private school kids are much more ill-behaved! Interesting perspective!

It sounds like you had a pretty bad experience, yikes! I went to a co-ed Catholic school and had a great time thankfully. We only had one nun (who was literally losing her mind and eccentric already, so that was a scream) and plenty of extracurricular activities. I remember being in public high school and students in 10th grade were learning remedial English that we'd been taught in 6th grade. So in an academic sense, the Catholic school I was at was definitely superior to public schools. Some of the other girls were a bit obnoxious it's true, but I was never on the receiving end of any of it and that goes on in all schools too. This was a thought-provoking article. :-}
