There are 2 things in life I love, baseball and going to the movies, so there is nothing I love more than a good baseball movie. Here are my top ten baseball movies in no particular order


1) Bull Durham – (1988) starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. Kevin Costner plays Crash Davis a career minor leaguer sent to the Carolina League to teach golden boy Nuke LaLoosh, Robbins, how to act like a ball player. Susan Sarandon plays Annie Savoy the team groupie who romances both players. Rated R

2) The Rookie – (2002) True story of Jim Morris who at the age of 35 realized his childhood dream of pitching in the Major Leagues. A very inspirational story and great family movie Rated G

3) Major League – (1989). New owner of the Cleveland Indians puts to together a team of misfits and has beens in hopes of moving the team to Miami. The team rises to the occasion to win in spite of the owner. Very funny movie that anyone who has rooted for a perennial losing team will appreciate. Rated R

4) The Natural (1984) Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs, a middle aged ball player whose career is sidetracked early on but comes out of nowhere to help the New York Knights. Rated PG

5) The Bad News Bears (1976) Walter Matthau coaches a little league team of misfits. Desperate to win he brings in a secret weapon, Amanda Wurlitzer to pitch. Anyone who ever played Little League will appreciate this movie. Rated PG Remade in 2005 with Billy Bob Thornton.

6) Eight Men Out (1988) Historically accurate story of the 1919 Chicago White Sox who were accused of throwing the 1919 World Series. Rated PG

7) A League of Their Own (1992) Story of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was formed during World War II while most of the men were off fighting. Comedy/Drama with a the classic line “There’s no crying in baseball.’ Rated PG

8) Pride of the Yankees (1942) True story of New York Yankee Legend Lou Gehrig who died too young after contracting Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis know known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Heartwarming and touching movie. You don’t have to be a Yankee fan to appreciate.

how about 'soul of the game' that HBO movie?

Eh. If you consider Field of Dreams a baseball movie then it should definitely be on the list. But I don't consider it being a baseball movie. It's about Ray and his dad, not baseball.
