Wedding Cakes You Can Afford

Is it possible to have a beautiful wedding cake for your wedding reception without sacrificing most of the wedding budget in the process? If you are struggling with the cost of your wedding, any area where you can save money helps, but the thought of buying a tacky sheet cake or offering your guests a lop-sided homemade confectionary tower often makes even the most cost-savvy bride shrink. But it is possible to have a reasonably-priced, lovely cake for your wedding at a fraction of the average cost.

1. Easy Tower Wedding Cake:
Items needed—2 tubs of white frosting, three white cake mixes (or preferred flavor), graduated round cake pans, and a tiered extra-large tidbit server that can be separated in sizes (that compliments the sizes of the cake pans), and paper or natural rose heads.

Directions—Mix the cake mixes in a large bowl, substituting the oil for applesauce. Fill round cake pans and bake. Allow to cool after baking, and ice on cooling trays. Separate the tidbit server and stack the cakes between the layers. Decorate with natural or paper rose heads.

2. Ascending Cakes Wedding Cake:
Items needed—Graduated round cake pans, glass pedestal cake plates of matching diameters (they do not need to match for pattern as long as they are all clear glass), 2 tubs of white frosting and three white cake mixes (or preferred flavor), 1 spool 2” and one of 3” wide ribbon in preferred colors. Preferred paper or natural rose heads.

Directions—Mix the cake mixes as indicated. Make four layers for the largest, three for the second largest, and so-on. Cool and ice the cakes and decorate with 2” ribbon around the sides of each cake. Add flowers as desired. To prepare for the reception, wind the 3” wide ribbon around the pedestals beneath the cakes.

3. Store Bought Stack Wedding Cake:
Items needed—Three or more cakes of graduated sizes from grocery bakery, a sturdy footed cake plate the size of the largest cake. Dowels to stabilize cakes and ribbon as preferred.
