In the United States, there are a significant number of adults who continue to be uninsured. For many of these adults, routine medical care is often not sought and, even worse, when illness or injury occurs, treatment is often delayed. As a result, many emergency rooms are burdened in their care for both the insured as well as the uninsured. Understanding there is a dire need to care for those who are uninsured, especially in terms of access to prescription medications, many hospitals are providing some degree of prescription medication benefit to the emergency room patients. Especially designed to serve patients who are uninsured, as well as those who seek emergency care when pharmacies are generally closed, emergency rooms and hospitals are providing vending services to dispense prescription medications.
If you are uninsured, or if you are visiting an emergency at odd-hours when the pharmacy may not be open, it is important to plan for your financial approach to not only managing the emergency room services but also any potential medical supplies you will need when returning home. While most patients do not think of the financial burden involved with prescription medications, emergency rooms are increasingly providing prescriptions in starter packs at no cost to the patient.
In your local hospital setting, you may find there is an in-house pharmacy program. Providing some of the most popular mediations, on a pre-packaged basis, your medication can be taken before you even leave the hospital premises. While many prescriptions are offered at no cost to you, there are some that require a nominal payment for which financial arrangements can be made by cash, check or credit card. If you are not able to pay the nominal fee for your full prescription, the pharmacy may provide a 24 to 48 hour dose at no cost so as to ensure you are provided with necessary medications until you can obtain the full prescription at a pharmacy off-site.
