I just finished reading the most ridiculous article on having a secular Christmas. This is, by definition, impossible.

The Word Christmas by definition is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. As we all know Christ is most definitely a religious figure. Christmas Day is a Religious Holy Day for Christians.

The word secular by definition means not religious or spiritual in nature. Ergo a secular Christmas is impossible. It is an oxymoron. For those who may not know what oxymoron means, it is two words that are contradictory to each other. Again, by all definitions a secular Christmas, is impossible.

Now that we have all the definitions out of the way I can move on to why I wrote this article. Yes, I am a Christian and celebrate the Birth Of Christ; therefore I celebrate Christmas. What I don't understand, is how people who choose not to believe in Christ, or celebrate his birth, can in all good conscience say they celebrate Christmas. They say they think of it as a day that revolves around Santa, family and friends. Then why do they call it Christmas? Again, Christmas is the celebration of the Birth Of Jesus Christ.

This article is NOT about how people should be Christian, or believe in Christ. Religion and belief is the choice of each individual person. However; I do find it offensive that these people are taking what is an important Religious Holiday to some, namely Christians, and twisting it into a day of worshipping Santa, family and friends. There are many religions all over the world. Each one has their own Holy Days. I would never think of demeaning or changing one of their important religious holidays into something it wasn't. To me that's being sacrilegious toward someone else's belief.

Why is it so acceptable in this country to take an important religious holiday of Christian people and change it into something it is definitely not? There cannot be any argument for this. I will always believe that everyone has the freedom to choose the religion they want, or none at all. But what I do have a problem with is taking anyone's Religious holiday and degrading to the level of something it is not.

Religious values are so important in our country. We are blessed with the right to believe as we wish. I applaud this right. I disdain anyone who preaches that there is only one way to believe. The values that you displayed are deep and spiritual.

Obviously there are some that don't have the intellectual capacity to understand the definitions given. Oxymoron or plain moron, take your pick!

Hannah, Don't let Jacko hurt your feelings. He thinks that he is funny, and relevant and that his opinion and feelings matter oh so much more than yours. You have to love it... all that Athiest charm and sensitivity. The only thing Jacko worships is Jack.. pray for him, he needs it.

I'm enjoying my Secular Christmas! December 25th actually has absolutely nothing to do with your so-called "Christ." It's a random day, chosen because the Christians wanted to piggyback their holiday on other winter holidays already in existance. I'm an Atheist and I put up a tree and lights, and when I have children, they'll enjoy a Secular Christmas, too. And a few months after that, we'll all enjoy a Secular Easter because bunnies and colored eggs are fun, not because we believe the absurd fairytale that a man 2,000 years ago rose from the dead. So Merry Secular Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

And some who do think about it's meaning want to erase all traces of it from public view. Very sad.

I agree. People just don't think about what the holiday means.
