The candle burns
as the ink fades.
This year has reached its end.
Its time to die has come,
so we must move on
to an unwritten chapter
of our lives
waiting to begin.
How to say good-bye?
Do we blow out the flame,
watch the smoke rise high,
and carry all those hopes and dreams
we hold to our hearts
away into the night
because we either lost them again
or the wish to live them
has been released
and waiting for life
in the next year?
Do we keep to the flame?
Should the fire continue to burn?
Has our dreams found life?
Will love find home here?
Must we keep to the flame
in hopes that our dreams and hope
will not die,
and if we fear
to turn fire into smoke,
will we indeed lose everything
that we struggled to find
in this past year?
And the wax runs down
like tears shed over the pain
written like sand
in this past chapter of our lives,
black ink and blue tears,
and was this year so bad
that it should die quickly?
Was this year worth remembering?
Touching the flame,
I wonder if it should remain alight,
and should I worry
about what's to come?
I think for now
that the fire
will continue to still burn.
