Making the decision to surrender a cat to an animal shelter or alternative owners can be a very difficult decision to reach, especially if you have grown attached to the animal. But there are a number of reasons why a cat cannot stay with a family. The following article lists some reasons why it would be in the cat's best interests to be given up to an animal shelter or straight to new cat owners.

Allergies

Unfortunately, not all cat owners know that they are allergic to cats when they first take on the responsibility to adopt a cat. But as the days, weeks and months progress, allergies can surface making it impossible to be in the same room as the cat let alone have the cat sit on your lap. Cat owners often feel very guilty about having to confine the cat to only a certain part of the home. If you have an allergy to cats, the best thing would be to give the cat up, for everyone's sake.

Fights with Other Cats

It is only natural that cats in the same household will rub each other up the wrong way from time to time and fight. But most cats are usually able to overcome their differences and live together fairly amicably. However, if there is constant tension in your household between cats who just cannot get along and that fight constantly, it is best to separate the cats and find a new home for the cat that is being attacked. It is not fair to watch as one of the cats ends up with cuts and scrapes on a regular basis.

Difficult to Train

Most cats can be trained over time. It just takes a lot of patience from cat owners. But there are cats that do not seem to want to accept any training on how to behave, treat other pets or how to use the litter tray correctly. This can cause no end of trouble for cat owners as they despair about what to do next. When they have tried everything, the final option might well be surrendering the cat to an animal shelter.

Takeaways
  • If you are allergic to cats, the cat should be given up
  • Cats who fight constantly might be better off living apart
  • It is difficult to train some cats; animal shelter can help

You should feel really ashamed for your comments. We have succesfully fostered and re-homed more than 30 cats last year, and all that is in this article sounds to us as excuses to make people who want to get rid of their animals happier with their actions. If you really think it is "cruel" for a cat to be confined to some parts of the house, you should visit and work in animal shelters. Oh!, and by the way, if the cat is actually "completely impossible to train" (what we doubt seriously...), don't you think it will also be impossible for the new owners? We just hope everybody reading this post will remember the right answer to the question presented here: When is it Time to Surrender a Cat to an Animal Shelter? NEVER! TO SURRENDER A CAT IS A SOLUTION FOR YOU, BUT NOT FOR YOUR CAT!

what people do not realize though is that cat dander can remain in a home for up to a year... If owner release is your only option then, please make sure about the shelter... consider contacting a rescue group instead.

Wonderful advice. Although it is always very hard, sometimes it's probably best for both the owners and the cat.

Very good advice. As much as it can seem harsh, there are times when giving the animal up is really the best scenario.

Excellent advice. It's always sad to have to do this, but it's better than turning an animal loose outside to fend for itself.
