It is a great privilege to be invited to a party or social gathering, but how can you be sure your presence is appreciated by your hostess, and that you will continue to be invited to future events? There are a few simple things that you can do to be a great party guest.

RSVP: First things first, respond to the invitation! It is vital that you let your hostess know that you are coming. Respond in the manner requested in the invitation, either by telephone or email and before the RSVP date given in the invitation. This will allow your hostess to plan for enough food and beverages. Do not bring a friend or date unless you have specific permission to do so.

On Time: Arrive on time, but not early. If you should arrive early because traffic was light, simply remain in your vehicle until the time stated on the invitation. Your hostess is likely scrambling around getting last minute details accomplished.

Bring a Gift: Never arrive empty-handed to a party. Your hostess has expended a great deal of time, effort and money to throw the party, so it is up to you to show great appreciation for these efforts. An appropriate hostess gift would be a basket of food or fruit, can of nuts or chocolate, candle and/or candle holder, set of wineglasses or wine charms, or a bottle of wine (if appropriate to your hostess). Another great hostess gift would be a 6-pack of bottled sparkling water such as Perrier or some other organic soft drink or bottled Starbucks drinks. Of course, a small plant or bouquet of flowers are always welcome and can be enjoyed by all.

Dress: Follow the dress code given in the invitation. If in doubt, wear business casual attire. Offer to remove your shoes when entering the home, especially if the weather is wet outside. Do not wear excessive perfumes as in a home environment this may overpower any scents the hostess is using.

Takeaways
  • Arrive on time but not early
  • Bring a gift
  • Help clean up
