President Bush has said that it is time to address income tax reform. The Fair Tax Act deserves a serious look.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert wants it brought to the floor for a vote. Majority leaded Tom DeLay supported it. Over fifty-five Representatives are cosponsoring it presently and more are jumping on board.

The Fair Tax Act (HR25/S1493) proposal covers three basic areas:

** Payroll taxes:
Each payday, I lose 17.5% of my paycheck to taxes (10 % to income tax, 6.1 percent to Social Security, and 1.4% to Medicare). This fair tax proposal would let me keep that entire 17.5%.

My employer would no longer have to pay corporate income taxes or the employer portion of my Social Security and Medicare taxes (another 7.5% of my salary).

Most citizens don’t realize that with our present system, corporations effectively don’t pay income taxes—only consumers do. Corporations and their suppliers simply pass on their taxation costs up the line until the final tax payment is made by the consumer himself through the increase in price of goods bought. This has been true since the income tax was initiated around 90 years ago and will always be true as part and parcel of the very system of income taxation itself.

Takeaways
  • The Income Tax was inititated in 1013.
  • The 1913 tax was less than 1% on only a fraction of the public.
  • The income tax code and regulations is almost 5.6 million words -- 7 times the length of the Bible!
Did You Know?
The income tax began at less than 1% and affected a tiny percentage of the publid.

If you were to read the actual IRS statutes in Title 26, especially 3401, paragraph (c) Employee, which refers to taxes withheld by the employer, you would quickly discover that unless you work for the government of an political entity, you are NOT employed for the purposes of taxes withheld. Most folks do not work for the government, and are not officers of a corporation, hence they are NOT employees. Very straight-forward reading. Do some more reading if you are not convinced. Remember, "income" is "any gain or profit," not the exchange of labor for compensation. Read, read and keep reading. Ask questions. You may ultimately decide that the taxes we have ARE the best form.

As a supporter of the FairTax, I have done alot of research on this plan. I agree with the authors interpretation in all but one respect. The first paragraph would lead you to believe that you would get your entire current paycheck, this would not be the case. Part of the embedded taxes that would need to be eliminated are including the taxes in your current paycheck, meaning that your pay would be reduced so that you would be paid what you currently bring home. This is the only way to eliminate the embedded taxes. This would mean that you would bring home the same amount you currently do, prices would drop (avg.22%) because of the elimination of embedded taxes, then the FairTax (23%) would be added to the price raising the final cost to about the same as under the current system. Hence, zero-sum. I still believe that this is a far better system for all of the other reasons the author listed, but wanted to clear this one issue up as it has been a common misconception of the FairT

As LeeAnne Buckner noted, the author's link is an error. That site is nothing but advertising and links to other sites. Some of the advertised items are even tax related but not necessarily Fair Tax related.

Regarding the "prebate": The amount of the prebate depends on the size of the family. Every citizen would recieve a prebate. Illegal aliens would find it difficult to receieve the prebate.

By eliminating the corporate (business) taxes mentioned above, manufacturers in the U.S. would be much more competitive with foreign-made products. Our exports would be greatly inceased, and our imports, whether they be autos, shoes, or whatever, would decrease because our American-made proiducts would at last be competitive. Manufacturers would expand their opertions here in the U.S. as there would be no incentive, no need, for them to build plants in foreign countries. Foreign corporations would increasingly build factories inthe U.S. in order to take advantage of our reduced mnaufacturing costs.

Please visit www.fairtax.org, I believe the link the author gives is an error.

Let's not let down our pursuit to get this fantastic legislation passed in Congress! Continue to write and phone your representative and senators to push their support for the FairTax Bill. Our voices will be heard for true federal tax reform!

This is truly amazing. It made my day. I will see to it that my fellow FairTax supporters and volunteers hit this website.
