I recently started working for a company overseas. Before I could begin work the company needed me to send them a set of hiring documents. International phone calls can be quiet expensive, so rather than fax the documents to the company I instead printed them out at home, filled them out, and then scanned the documents and emailed them to the company. Since I do not own a fax machine, scanning the documents and emailing them rather than taking them to a copy shop to fax them.

In addition to scanning documents to email and archive on your computer scanner as can be great for preserving photos. With a scanner you can take paper photographs and turn them into digitals in your computer. Scanner photos can be enhanced in photo editing programs liked photohsop, or emailed to friends and family.

A scanner is a great thing to have on hand in your home. Getting a great scanner doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Here are some of the best scanners on the market today for under $100.
