From punk to metal to club kid to Goth, alternative fashion has had its share of metamorphosis. Current trends point to a more mature and purpose-driven Goth style as opposed to the freaky and frightening fashion only a few seasons ago. Fashion is actually starting to take notice that Goth may actually be more than just a trend in protesting pop culture. Goth does have a lot going for it. Unlike most fashion trends, Goth has staying power, even though it has evolved from punk to its latest incarnation.

What most recognize as Goth is basic black, but we’re not talking the black of the legendary Johnny Cash. This black is a celebration of moods in dark attitudes, depression, and a fascination with death. There is even a Goth trend of Vampire Fascination and necromanticism adding skin paling and dark mascara to the look. Other versions of the current Goth includes pirate mod, anarchist, macabre, doll passion, shock Goth, Lolita style, cyber goth, a revival of Club Kids, androgyny, and ren and medieval fare (and most usually a mixture of several.)

Pirate Mod: Likely inspired by recent Pirates of the Caribbean movies and Captain Morgan, this Goth style adds pirate boots, beards, and skulls with crossbones into the mix.

Anarchist: This Goth style and mood is one that is government-unfriendly.

Macabre: This Goth style focuses on death and usually dark poetry and literature.

Doll Passion: Whether making their own doll (Volks, Obitsu, etc.) this Goth style is all about dressing the doll to compliment its owner. Both guys and gals own dolls.

Shock Goth: This Goth style incorporates blood and gore to the wardrobe.

Lolita Style: Dressing like an immature girl is the basis behind Lolita style. Some choose schoolgirl uniforms as part of this look.

Cyber Goth: Incorporates tech to Goth fashion.

Club Kids: Can be anything from shock to severe costuming.

Androgeny: You can not tell if this Goth is a boy or a girl, and that is how they like it.

Medieval: This style incorporates corsets, gowns, flowing poet shirts, and pagan influence.

Some must-have Goth gear:

Takeaways
  • From punk to metal to club kid to Goth, alternative fashion has had its share of metamorphosis.
  • What most recognize as Goth is basic black, and not the black of legendary Johnny Cash.
  • Goth is a mood, a philosophy, and a sensation of acceptance for your personal style.

Goth isn't a fashion trend. It is for gifted and intellectual people who are deep, expressive, sensitive, and passionate. Stop trying to cash in on it as though there is no substance. Goth can be about aesthetics, literature, films, philosophy, poetry, music, but for many it is also a way of life and is very personal, and is for people of all ages and ambitions. Goths display true decadence and imagination that mainstream society lacks. It is also a very spiritual thing, and it is offensive to regard it as a trend. Goth isn't something that you can act all ditzy about as you try to be trendy and fashionable. Take it seriously for once. Stop trying to co-opt a beautiful culture!
