Eight Months of Life

As of this writing, it is nearing eight months since the day of my salvation, when I gave my heart and life to Jesus Christ. While reflecting on the stark contrast between my life now and my life prior to knowing Jesus, I felt led to write this poem. My hope is that the glory of the Lord will be reflected in some way by the words I have written.

Eight Months of Life

Though I've been rescued from the black abyss,
I can still remember the nothingness.
I know quite well what death feels like,
For I have lived but eight months of life.

It's not been so long that I have forgot
How empty is life when you know not God,
How sad it is when you believe
We are naught but cogs in a machine.

I am close enough that I can recall
The terrible torture of the free fall
That is the fury and despair
Of insisting that God is "not there."

I've withered in the embrace of sorrow,
Hardly anticipating tomorrow.
I'd tremble, lest morning not come;
With anguished lament, I'd greet the sun.

But I've been rescued from that black abyss!
Existence is no longer nothingness,
But a precious gift from on high.
Eight months ago, the Lord saved my life!

No longer imprisoned by the world's lies,
With eagerness my eyes greet the daylight!
Each moment is a chance to serve
The Creator of our universe.

With every remaining breath I possess,
I will praise God in the time I have left.
I'll tell the truth, in Jesus' name,
As long as one man remains unsaved.

I pray to Christ that I'll never forget
The void subsistence I'd be living yet,
Had it not been for my Lord's grace
That plucked my sin-stained soul from that place!

Oh, I've been rescued from a black abyss,
From spiritual death, and from nothingness!
How brightly God's marvelous light
Has shone in me these eight months of life!
