A Family-friendly yet Fun New Year's Event in Akron

New Year's Eve is often known as a fun-filled night of partying, but for those families with young children it can be a stressful event. The large crowds, prevalence of alcohol, and tendency to disorderly behavior can frighten children, making what should be a festive and fun night a time of discomfort. However, in Akron, Ohio, the city has done an excellent job of creating a night with activities particularly designed to appeal to young children, allowing both them and their parents an exciting and safe celebration.

This event is called First Night Akron, and is a festival with scores of activities, some designed particularly for children or families. Some seventy distinct performing groups or artists, sponsored by local businesses and organizations, perform at venues scattered across the downtown area. The list of musical styles is as varied as the tastes of the individual: tribute bands to the Beatles, Elvis, or '60s music; the University of Akron's acclaimed steel drum band; folk music groups, playing Irish, American, and Scottish tunes; bands with rock, pop, reggae, and blues influences; and even several barbershop quartets. Also, several comedians known for their clean language and subject matter will entertain the crowds.

Particularly appealing for families is the prohibition of alcohol for the festivities. The downtown restaurants in the area surrounding the indoor events do not serve alcoholic beverages, ensuring a peaceful and non-threatening party environment. Also, there are a number of activities designed specifically for children: face-painting, arts and crafts booths, hair-braiding, origami, and even a digital rhythm jam session with "soundbeam technology." Kids of all interests can find something fun to do, and with the city's promise that every event is family-friendly, parents don't have to worry about any inappropriate situations in any of the performances or activities.
